The 5th Shanghai International Debate Open was held by Shanghai University of Finance and Economics (SUFE) from April 19 to 21, attracting 168 teams from 30 countries.

The three-day contest invited 46 professional judges from home and abroad to evaluate the performance of debaters from top universities such as Oxford, Cambridge, Tsinghua, and Peking University.

This year’s competition employed a system based on the British Parliamentary Style, emphasizing the participants’ overall logical arguments and on-site emergency response.

The best debater award went to Cambridge University student Ashish Kumar, whose team won this year’s laureate, according to the results announced by Loke Wing Fatt, executive director of the contest.

"As the host, we will continue to ensure the high quality of the annual event which provides a platform for participants from around the world to develop their cross-cultural communication skills," said Qiao Xiaomei, dean of the School of Foreign Languages at SUFE.
